Frequently Asked Questions

What types of products get accepted?

There are three requirements for being accepted to the Marketplace.

Products must be …

  • Handmade or designed by a maker based in Tampa Bay
Just like our requirements to be listed in our maker directory, your business or market must be located within the Tampa Bay area to be eligible for the Marketplace. Our definition of the “Tampa Bay area” includes Citrus, Hernando, Hillsborough, Manatee, Pasco, Pinellas, Polk, and Sarasota counties.
Our definition of “handmade” requires that either you as the business owner or another member of your business makes and/or designs your items. The use of a production partner is accepted as long as the designs being used are a creation of your business. Ex. you design graphics that are screen printed onto apparel by a third party.
  • Unique to and made specifically for Handmade Tampa Bay
To ensure we’re promoting your business and not competing with it, we require all items in the Marketplace to be unique to Handmade Tampa Bay and not something you already sell elsewhere whether that’s on your own website or to other retailers.
  • Available for wholesale purchasing
We operate the Marketplace by filling it with items we purchase at wholesale prices from our local makers. Makers are paid in full at the time of the order, and we handle all promotions, operations, and fulfillment related to purchases from the Marketplace.
  • Made with high quality and attention to detail
High-quality pieces reinforce the idea to our community that shopping small doesn’t mean the quality is less than that of a bigger brand.

What is wholesale?

Wholesale is one of the ways that makers get their products to reach new customers. It works by a retailer (in this case, Handmade Tampa Bay) purchasing items from a seller (in this case, your handmade business) at a wholesale price.

Wholesale pricing is usually 50% of the retail price, which is what you sell your products for to your direct customers. Selling your products at 50% less than usual might sound wild, but here’s why it can be worth it:

  • You can require a minimum order amount to qualify for wholesale pricing. This can be based on the number of items or the total purchase amount.
  • You get paid by the retailer when the order is placed rather than waiting for a payout each time your items sell on the retailer’s site or in their store.
  • You don’t have to fulfill the individual orders.
  • You don’t have to market the items – leave the photography, product listings, advertising, and social media posts up to the retailer.

All in all, once you fulfill the order to the retailer, your work is finished, and you’re paid for it then and there.

How do I make my products unique for Handmade Tampa Bay?

We require all of our items in the Marketplace to be your take on the Handmade Tampa Bay brand and mission to support our local maker community to promote your business and not competition.

Here’s an example of how one of our makers makes her products unique for the Marketplace:

Tay Dunworth makes embroidered hats. Rather than carrying a hat Tay Dunworth already makes and sells, we carry a hat that was specially designed for Handmade Tampa Bay with the design “Support Your Local Makers” on the front and the Handmade Tampa Bay logo on the side.

The hat is the same style that Tay Dunworth already carries but has a twist specifically based on Handmade Tampa Bay.

Why can't I submit products I already make?

We want to promote your local handmade business, not compete with it.

Because of this, we require all of our items in the Marketplace to be your take on the Handmade Tampa Bay brand and mission to support our local maker community.

And that’s not because we want you to do extra work on our behalf! Trust us, we know that small business owners already have more than enough to do.

We require this because we want to strategically introduce your products and your business to our audience. When browsing the Marketplace, they can find goods that speak directly to their belief in our mission while experiencing the work of a local maker they might not know about.

If they purchase your goods in the Marketplace, we encourage further experiences by directing them to your sales and marketing channels through a promotional card in their shipment, email marketing that shares more about your business, and easy-to-find links to your social media accounts and website in our directory and Marketplace.

What happens if my products aren't accepted?

If your application is denied, you should receive guidelines as to why this happened and how to revise your application/product to be accepted. Our goal is to accept as many products as possible, so we will give as much feedback as possible to get your product perfect for the Marketplace.

Some of the reasons your product might not initially be accepted are …

  • We already carry a similar product
  • Your product doesn’t align with our brand
  • We need more information about your product

If your products weren’t accepted, and you need more clarification, please reach out here.
